As an alumnus of the United World College of Costa Rica, I continue to be actively involved with the movement. Since 2016, I serve on the UWC National Committee of Botswana. I have streamlined the online application process for the committee to simplify the process for applicants and also for the application reviewers. I also oversaw the migration of the national committee website from its previous platform to the new one administered by the UWC International Office. In addition, I carry out standard committee member duties including reviewing applications and recommending applicants for nomination for placement to UWC schools around the world. I am also a part of a project to build an alumni network for UWC Botswana. I intend to step down from the committee effective March 1, 2025, passing on the baton to continue the great work we do.
In 2018 and 2019, I had the honor to serve as an adult mentor at the annual UWC USA Constructive Engagement of Conflict Retreat. . The CEC Retreat is a program under the Bartos Institute that seeks to provide students with a formal program that builds the skills of peacemaking, conflict resolution, goal-setting, and collaboration. My role as an adult mentor was to support the courage, vulnerability and boldness of the student leaders in a small group, rather than take over the leadership or facilitation of the group. As they described it, I was a “keeper of the circle” and all I needed to do was “put [my] arms around the circle”.
